Sperm and egg derive from germline cells. Two studies report efficient generation of human germline cells in vitro, implicating PRDM1 and SOX17 in the process. This is a step towards in vitro gametogenesis and may allow screening of agents affecting fertility.

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids induce canonical autophagy and a novel non‐canonical autophagic pathway, respectively; this might represent an ancient mechanism for the recycling of lipophiles from membranes via distinct degradative pathways.

Inhibiting the E3 ligase synoviolin with the specific inhibitor LS‐102 can be potentially exploited to fight obesity, as this ligase is now shown to control body weight and energy expenditure in mice.

Synaptic signaling altering nuclear gene expression and long‐term changes in synapse function occurs not only on postsynaptic, but also on presynaptic sites.

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) generate sperm and oocytes. A defined differentiation system induces human pre‐migratory PGC‐like cells (PGCLCs) from pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) in vitro. This protocol allows disease modeling and may lead to the generation of gametes for reproductive medicine.

A systematic screen in cancer cells reveals that unsaturated and saturated fatty acids induce autophagy via distinct pathways, with unsaturated fatty acids acting in a Golgi‐dependent but Beclin‐1‐independent manner.

Cyclin O mutations cause congenital mucociliary clearance disorder linked to a reduced number of motile cilia in the airway epithelium. This is caused by malfunctioning deuterosomes that lead to fewer and partially defective centrioles.
