  • Natura recalls pet food, treats on salmonella fears
Natura Pet Products has issued a recall affecting specific lots of several brands of dry pet food and treats over concerns they may be contaminated with salmonella, which can sicken pets and people who handle contaminated food. The brands subject to recall -- Innova Dry, EVO, California Natural, Healthwise, Karma and Mother Nature -- were sold in the U.S. and Canada via veterinary practices, retail outlets and online. • Wild mice study shows complexity of treating multiple illnesses
Treating a single parasitic illness in wild mice with multiple infections may make the untreated illnesses worse, according to a University of Edinburgh study. The findings may shed light on treating people and other animals with multiple illnesses, but more research is needed, said lead author Amy Pedersen. • 150 years young, AVMA's core mission is unchanged
The AVMA, which turns 150 this month, had several homes before landing in Schaumburg, Ill. In 1863, the organization launched in New York, then moved to Detroit and soon after Chicago before settling in Schaumburg in 1975. In 1991, the AVMA moved into its current five-story headquarters. AVMA's membership has grown from 1,650 to 84,000 over the past century, and the field has grown increasingly complex, said President Dr. Doug Aspros. "One hundred and fifty years ago, veterinarians were just horse doctors because that was the business," Dr. Aspros said. One thing that hasn't changed, he said, is the group's purpose: "To ensure animal and human health and advance the veterinary profession." Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, Ill.) • Plan ahead to keep pets safe when disaster strikes
Keeping family pets safe during floods, fires, tornadoes and other disasters requires advance preparation, starting with a plan for how you will take pets with you if you are required to evacuate, veterinarian Michael Watts writes. The AVMA has compiled disaster planning resources for pet owners and policymakers as well as a checklist for assembling an animal evacuation kit. Star-Exponent (Culpeper, Va.)
