What are the 4 elements of successful flipped classrooms?
Effective flipped instruction depends on four elements, according to a recent report by the Flipped Learning Network, George Mason University and Pearson's Center for Educator Effectiveness. These pillars include flexible environments, a shift in focus for the classroom to become student-centered, an evaluation from teachers about what content needs to be taught directly and the presence of trained, professional teachers, the report finds. L.A. schools invest in iPads for all students
The Los Angeles Board of Education has approved the first phase of a 14-month roll-out of iPads districtwide. Under the plan, the district will spend $30 million to equip students in 47 schools with the devices by the end of the year. The remaining schools will receive the tablets within 14 months as part of the second phase. Tamar Galatzan, a school board member, described this approach as the "least-expensive" option. Can districts regulate educators' private social media accounts?
Officials in an Oregon school district are consulting with legal counsel to determine how far they can go in regulating what staff members post on private social media accounts. The scrutiny stems from concerns about offensive images and posts on an elementary-school principal's Instagram and Twitter accounts. The district's current policy sets rules for communication with students and the posting of confidential information via social media. The Oregonian (Portland) (6/19)

Duncan: States can seek flexibility with new evaluation systems
The U.S. Department of Education will consider requests to delay personnel consequences for teachers and administrators tied to new assessments under the Common Core State Standards, Education Secretary Arne Duncan wrote Tuesday in a letter to state school chiefs. Duncan said requests for waivers will be considered on a case-by-case basis and, if approved, states could delay for one year the consequences tied to performance under the common core to the 2016-17 academic year.
