Fla. teachers connect with online donors to stock classrooms
In Florida and elsewhere, teachers are using the online charity DonorsChoose.org to provided needed supplies and resources for their classrooms. Through the site, teachers share their stories online and tell readers about their needs. Donors then provide funds to help supply the items, which this year in Hillsborough County include a guitar for an elementary school and various pieces of physical-education equipment at another school. How can teachers ensure they build a classroom community that includes meaningful relationships -- able to exist along with technology? In this blog post, Andrew Marcinek, a director of technology in Massachusetts, writes that he recognizes the device can take precedence and suggests teachers create time for offline discussions, help students connect with each other in person and integrate the concept of a Facebook wall into the physical classroom space. Education Secretary Duncan pushes school broadband agenda
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan campaigned for President Barack Obama's ConnectED program on Friday via a video address to an online summer camp for teens in which he equated broadband advancement in schools to the necessity of teaching science, technology, engineering and math. Through ConnectED, the administration wants to bring broadband services to 99% of the nation's schools and libraries. "We want to make sure all students get access to the latest digital technologies, explore new ideas through online content and resources," Duncan said. CIO.com (8/19)

S.C. district tests program that plays audio messages on school buses
Horry County, S.C., will test a high-tech system in 10 school buses this year modeled after bus tours in Disney World. Under the program, the buses will be outfitted with an audio system that plays various messages -- including safety warnings -- at certain locations, tracked through a GPS system installed in the buses. The buses selected for the pilot program had the highest number of discipline issues. WBTW-TV (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) (8/19)

Some Miss. educators say common core tests are worth the investment
Several education officials in Mississippi say the $29.50 per student charge for the new Common Core State Standards math and language arts assessments are cheaper than current exams and offer a fuller picture of student achievement. Changes that some education officials say they welcome include the online testing format that requires students to use critical-thinking skills. "The students will be able to interact with graphs, manipulate shapes, click on an excerpt of an essay and then a video with the task of typing an essay explaining the similarities/differences of the content they read or watched," said Richard Bailko, with the Mississippi Department of Education's Office of Student Assessment. Free changes teachers can make that have a big impact on students
There are several small changes teachers can make that cost nothing but can drastically improve students' experience, long-time educator Jim Dillon writes in this blog post. Among them, Dillon suggests teachers be polite; think of their class as a community, rather than a group; be interested and interesting; and have high expectations for students. Teachers should show they care, Dillon writes, by creating "NEED to TALK" cards "for students to use and place on their desk in case it is hard to verbally ask for help."
