The U.S. government this week declared the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus a public health emergency and national security threat, a declaration that empowers the FDA to fast-track diagnostic tests and other tools used to identify and prevent infections in U.S. citizens abroad. Similar designations were conferred for the H1N1 swine influenza in 2009 and for the H7N9 avian influenza this year. MERS has been confirmed in 54 human cases and 30 deaths. The Hill/Healthwatch blog (6/4) - Questionnaire offers new way to monitor canine arthritis
Veterinarians at the University of Liverpool have created a questionnaire for owners of arthritic dogs to better characterize arthritic status. Owners rate their dog's stiffness, lameness, exercise levels and other parameters. The data are digitized for future comparison. "This record of behavior history, together with clinical assessment, could provide a more detailed understanding of how the disease is progressing, and importantly how healthy and comfortable the dog is," said veterinarian Ben Walton. PhysOrg.com (6/4) - Dogs and humans with OCD share brain characteristics
Canine compulsive disorder is similar to human obsessive compulsive disorder in practice and physiology, according to recent research. MRI images of 16 Doberman pinschers showed that those with canine compulsive disorder had structural brain characteristics similar to those of human patients with OCD. Veterinarians from Tufts and Purdue universities collaborated with McLean Hospital in Massachusetts for the study. The findings may help develop treatments for canines and humans with compulsive disorders. The Inquisitr (6/4) | We're here, even when times are rough. Pets with allergies are often extremely itchy and uncomfortable, sometimes causing harm with their excessive scratching, writes veterinarian Donna Solomon. Most commonly, dogs exhibit allergic symptoms through their skin, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract, according to Dr. Solomon. Coordinating diagnosis and care with a veterinarian is the best way to establish a plan that will fit each pet's symptoms. The Huffington Post/The Blog (6/4) - Birds of prey undergo physical exam without anesthesia
National Aviary veterinarian Pilar Fish developed a novel method of restraining and examining birds without anesthesia, eliminating a serious risk for the birds. Under Dr. Fish's method, several people restrain the birds and balls strapped to the animals' feet prevent them from using their talons while she conducts a physical exam and obtains blood samples. The exam lasts a mere eight minutes. "Safety is my main concern," said Dr. Fish after examining one of the aviary's Steller's sea eagles. "Those Steller's eagles are ambassadors for their wild counterparts. They are educating thousands and thousands of people about eagles." Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (6/4) - Startup promotes dog collar accessory as health barometer
Whistle Labs, based in San Francisco, developed a dog collar accessory that records activity and may help owners and veterinarians better assess a pet's health, according to company co-founder Ben Jacobs. "Dogs can't speak for themselves," said Jacobs. "This could tell you if something is going very wrong." The accessory works with iPhones, and the company plans to extend compatibility to other devices this year.
