University of Sydney veterinarian Vanessa Barrs began investigating in 2006 after three cats presented with unusual infections that spread from the nasal cavity to create growths in the eye socket. After six years of research, Dr. Barrs and an international team of experts identified the fungus as Aspergillus felis, a newly identified species with the power to cause dangerous respiratory infections in people as well as cats. Fish farms in warmer climates may be particularly susceptible to outbreaks of skin flukes, salmon anemia and other diseases with the potential to decimate populations, according to research that looked at reports of fish farm disease outbreaks around the world. Diseases are difficult to control in water, and even farms at northern latitudes are susceptible to problems, posing concerns for food supplies. Experts said changes in climate could mean more problems for farms as temperatures rise.
