News for animal health professionals | | Veterinary Medicine Update | | | | | | - Emerging zoonoses: When should we start to worry?
A new coronavirus has sickened only a handful of people worldwide, but about half have died and the confirmed cases raise the specter of another SARS epidemic. The issue and other emerging diseases also raise difficult questions about when health officials need to sound the alarm about exotic diseases, writes author and medical researcher Mark Honigsbaum. "The paradox is that the digital technologies that enable us to monitor the emergence of exotic diseases and take action to prevent pandemics are the very same technologies that spread fear." The Guardian (London) (2/14) - Study: In the right conformation, prions serve a purpose
Prions responsible for causing bovine spongiform encephalopathy and similar diseases, including Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, which infects humans, may actually serve a role in helping brains to develop, according to a report in Journal of Neuroscience. Researchers discovered that prion proteins could be helpful or infectious depending on whether the protein was correctly formed. Normal prions were fundamental in protecting nerves, while misfolded prions caused the infectious diseases. Nature (free content) (2/14) - Mice shed light on human evolution
Research using mouse models has helped advance countless lines of disease research, and a new study shows that the approach can be used to explore the evolutionary origins of humans, too. Harvard University researchers were able to show how a gene variant may have played a role in human adaptation to hot, humid climates. "It's one of the first papers that clearly shows that a change that was important in recent human evolution can be modeled in the mouse," said evolutionary geneticist Wolfgang Enard, who was not part of the study. Mother and cub are bonding after a 9-year-old Sumatran tiger gave birth to a cub at the San Francisco Zoo, officials say. "All signs seem to be positive so far," said Corinne MacDonald, curator of carnivores and primates at the zoo. The cub appears active and to be eating well. It will be at least two weeks before the cub is examined. Reuters (2/14) - Preventive care is key to affordable pet ownership
People should research the costs of pet ownership before bringing home a new animal friend and budget accordingly, say veterinarians Peter Maguire of Colorado State University and Joseph Bartges of the University of Tennessee. Although owners can be surprised by the cost of treatments for animals, Dr. Bartges points out that therapies for cancer and other conditions in animals often cost far less than treatments for the same conditions in humans. Dr. Bartges and Cornell University veterinarian Brian Collins also emphasize the importance of regular veterinary care for ensuring optimal health and avoiding procedures that could have been prevented with appropriate care such as vaccinations and parasite control. - Understand your management style to become a better leader
Some leaders prefer to take charge of the decision-making process by using an autocratic or paternalistic management style, writes Lee Polevoi. Others would rather give their employees more responsibility by acting as democratic or laissez-faire managers. "By better understanding which kind of manager you are, you can adapt or modify your style as necessary and cultivate the most effective work environment for you and your employees," Polevoi writes.
