The AVMA has provided new details about a private marketplace where members can compare and buy health insurance policies. The marketplace will be rolled out in two phases this spring: the first for members who turn 65 or older this year, and the second for all other members. "Our new Web-based insurance exchange marketplace will enable our members to easily and conveniently review and compare medical insurance options, and is an innovative solution to the challenges created by recent events impacting GHLIT medical coverage," said Dr. James Brandt, chairman of the AVMA Group Health Life Insurance Trust. Dogs in a recent study demonstrated flexible thinking, which would allow them to understand a human's perspective, according to researcher Juliane Kaminski from the University of Portsmouth in the U.K. In the study of 84 dogs, animals were four times more likely to eat food they had been ordered to stay away from when the lights were turned off, even though the owner was still in the room. A turtle rescued by fishermen in 2008 is swimming again thanks to prosthetic fins. The animal is believed to have been attacked by a shark. The 220-pound female loggerhead sea turtle, named Hu, was fitted with dozens of artificial fins before Suma Aqualife Park researchers in Kobe, Japan, found the perfect match in her current rubber fins that are held in place with a vest. - Determining necessary vaccines for a horse
When it's time to decide what vaccines are necessary for horses, veterinarian Jennifer Coates revisits the American Association of Equine Practitioners guidelines for core and risk-based vaccines. The core vaccines are necessary for every horse, while the risk-based vaccines are recommended for some horses under certain circumstances. Accidental pet poisonings in 2012 increased 7% over the previous year, according to the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center, and human medications are often the culprit. Insurance claims for toxin exposure and ingestion submitted to PetPlan averaged $465 after deductibles were met. To prevent accidental pet poisonings, veterinarians recommend storing medications properly and taking them when pets aren't around. As temperatures rise across the nation, fungal spores in feed may begin to grow, and some produce mycotoxins, which can result in grains being refused by dealers or deemed unfit for livestock. To prevent mycotoxin development, University of Nebraska Extension specialist Tom Dorn recommends cleaning grain bins with a bleach solution, then rinsing several days later.
