  • Are schools meeting students' technology expectations?
School districts nationwide are struggling to keep up with ever-changing technology and with students' increasingly high expectations for classroom tech. Gene Carter, executive director and CEO of ASCD, said students expect the same technology in school that they have access to outside of school and at home. "One of the big criticisms of many schools is that they are not authentic learning institutions because what happens outside the schoolhouse differs significantly from what students are exposed to," he said. • Group to develop rubric for what works in math
A group of education stakeholders recently came together to discuss plans for developing a reliable resource that would provide educators with information about which math aids are effective. Officials say the first step is to determine the criteria that will be used to determine what works. "If it's the same old stuff and it just looks more glitzy because it's on the iPad or on the computer, it's not going to have any impact," said Linda Gojak, president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. • How can schools curb cyberbullying?
While some legislatures have taken steps to address cyberbullying, school administrators still are grappling with their role in curbing cyberbullying that occurs off campus. Some schools have implemented anti-bullying programs and social-emotional development curricula and used anti-bullying applications, such as anonymous reporting tools. "Until the Supreme Court takes up this issue, the law still lags behind the reality of how we live," Francisco Negron, chief counsel for the National Association of School Boards, said. • Calif. could alter funding formula for schools
California Gov. Jerry Brown is seeking to overhaul the state's education funding system in part by giving school districts greater autonomy in how they spend their money and directing more money to low-income students and English-language learners. The proposal follows a ballot initiative in which voters approved additional funding for schools. The Sacramento Bee (Calif.) • Most Israeli high-school students use cellphones during class
A recent study shows that 94% of high-school students in Israel use mobile phones in class to surf social networking websites, take photos and videos, and complete other tasks. Many also report text messaging and making phone calls during class. "The use of the devices largely stands out. Students who highly disturb the flow of the lesson also are at risk for potential long-term, persistent and accumulative damage that expands far beyond the classroom," wrote researchers from the University of Haifa. • Educators need to identify their safe harbor
Educator should seek refuge in their "harbor" -- an area of familiarity -- when undertaking a new teaching skill or curriculum, writes Mike Fisher, an educational consultant and instructional coach. In this blog post, he uses the metaphor of a ship, saying that ships are not intended to be anchored forever and that it is important to know where you are going before you begin the journey.
