TRP channel blamed for burning cold after a tropical fish meal

Ciguatera is one of the most common forms of food poisoning, occurring after consumption of fish contaminated with ciguatoxins. New work by Vetter et al reveals the key molecular players that underlie the altered temperature sensation associated with ciguatera.

Birthing histone mRNAs by CSR-1 section

Histone pre-mRNAs undergo maturation through a mechanism distinct from all other RNA Pol II transcripts. In C. elegans, 3′-end processing of histone mRNAs depends on the RNAi pathway involving the Argonaute protein CSR-1.

Ciguatoxins activate specific cold pain pathways to elicit burning pain from cooling

Ciguatoxins derived from fish lead to cold allodynia in humans, the perception of intense burning pain in response to mild cooling. A novel mouse model of ciguatoxin-induced cold allodynia reveals that ciguatoxin activates the TRPA1 thermosensitive ion channel to mediate pain perception.

The E3 ligase HOIP specifies linear ubiquitin chain assembly through its RING-IBR-RING domain and the unique LDD extension

Like Parkin, the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex LUBAC functions as a RING/HECT-hybrid ubiquitin ligase, but includes a unique extension that dictates linear ubiquitin linkage specificity.

Endoglin mediates fibronectin/α5β1 integrin and TGF-β pathway crosstalk in endothelial cells

The integrin and TGF-β signalling pathways reciprocally cross-activate in angiogenesis in vivo. Fibronectin promotes TGF-β signalling by inducing the endoglin/ALK1 TGF-β receptor complex, while TGF-β increases α5β1 integrin signalling through binding to endoglin.
