  • Schools offered free access to Microsoft Office
A Microsoft executive has announced that schools will have access to Microsoft Office 365 -- a cloud-based technology that provides access to Microsoft Office tools -- for free. The program is used by businesses worldwide. However, some have questioned the motives behind companies, such as Google, that have provided free technology for schools, saying they are hoping to get students accustomed to using their products at an early age. • School field trips go high-tech
Field trips have taken a backseat to in-school education in the decade since No Child Left Behind was signed into law, as more schools abandon off-campus learning in favor of test-based instruction. Now, however, many schools are using technology to take students on virtual field trips. Such trips include going online for video or photo tours of museums and other sites. Some advocates, however, say students will miss out on opportunities by not taking actual field trips. Cincinnati.com (10/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • Colo. schools see money savings with four-day weeks
Many school districts in Colorado have adopted four-day school weeks, in part, because they can save money. While national data show that districts can save 2.5% for a 20% reduction in instructional days -- in part from busing, food service and maintenance -- officials in Colorado say that savings could allow them to preserve instructional positions.
