In a Japanese study, researchers evaluated oral bacteria in people and dogs, finding that the species share microbes. According to the study, 10 bacteria common to human oral plaques were present in dogs, while a bacteria species generally relegated to the canine mouths was found in some dog owners. Bacterial sharing was greater in cases where contact between humans and dogs was high, but even low-contact relationships resulted in transmission of bacteria between species. - Dental X-rays uncover hidden problems
Because evidence of periodontitis can be hidden beneath the gum line, regular dental cleanings should be accompanied by dental X-rays, recommends veterinarian Ed Mapes. Periodontal disease occurs when food particles, debris and bacteria build up on teeth, causing an infection that erodes the gums, which can lead to abscesses and tooth decay as well as systemic infections involving the kidneys, heart and lungs, writes Dr. Mapes. Tooth decay can also cause pain leading to lethargy, changes in personality, inadequate nutrition and weight loss as pets may avoid eating. Sheri Lee has been rescuing dogs from the Crow and Northern Cheyenne reservations in Montana for eight years. The dogs are often severely malnourished and infested with intestinal parasites as well as fleas and ticks. Lee takes the dogs to a veterinarian for treatment and to be spayed or neutered and then works to get the animals adopted.
