  • H3N2v review and recommendations for pork producers
Reported human cases of the H3N2v influenza strain have reached 289 infections, 15 hospitalizations and one death since July, according to the CDC. Veterinarians Jeff Bender and Albert Rovira and researcher Bruce Alexander provide recommendations for pork producers to prevent influenza transmission between animals and human workers and suggest guidelines for how to handle suspected cases. • Canine genetics research sheds light on human diseases
Scientists are learning about conditions that afflict both dogs and people by studying canine genetics, writes physician Murray Feingold. Canine studies of chondrodysplasia, a genetic condition that causes abnormally short limbs in dogs and humans, have identified the gene and the chromosome responsible for the condition. Other disorders dogs and humans both suffer from include some cancers, epilepsy and lupus erythematosus, and Dr. Feingold says canine genetics research will help dogs and people. • Veterinarians work to make general anesthesia safe for pets
Veterinarian Ann Hohenhaus explains that although use of general anesthesia in pets is not risk-free, clinicians work to minimize risk. Veterinary professionals prepare an animal for anesthesia using pre-anesthetic blood work as well as planning monitoring techniques during the procedure. A study from England found the risk of death during general anesthesia is 0.1% for pets, but it's still a major concern among pet owners, writes Dr. Hohenhaus. • Vaccinate horses against EEE, veterinarian urges
Twelve horses in a five-parish region of Louisiana have died from Eastern equine encephalitis, a virus transmitted by mosquitoes, in recent weeks. None of the animals were vaccinated, even though the preventive is easy to administer and cost-effective, says veterinarian Ted Shope. "That's why it's critical that the equine community get at least one vaccination and a month later a booster shot if the mosquito population remains high," said Dr. Shope. KPLC-TV (Lake Charles, La.) • West Nile virus in horses, humans, dogs and cats
Veterinarian Ed Mapes addresses the surge in West Nile virus infections this season, noting that mosquitoes are the primary vector and horses are the most commonly affected animals. Although humans can also contract the disease through a mosquito bite, they may be exposed via blood transfusions, organ transplants and even during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Dogs and cats can become infected but don't develop clinical disease, Dr. Mapes writes, adding that infected animals do not transmit the disease to people. He lists some preventative measures. • Ohio's exotic animal law goes into effect today
As of today, Ohio's new exotic animal law takes effect and prohibits buying, selling, transferring and trading exotic animals but allows people who already posses exotic pets to keep them, provided they obtain a license and insurance and have the pets microchipped, among other requirements. The law was created after exotic animal owner Terry Thompson released dozens of animals including tigers and black bears from his property, most of whom were killed by law enforcement officials. Thompson then committed suicide. The Repository (Canton, Ohio)/The Associated Press (9/4) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
