  • UC Davis dean: Veterinarians serve important public health role
The new dean of the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine, veterinarian Michael Lairmore, discusses the challenges facing veterinary education today, including funding for veterinary programs and the ethical use of animals for research. The rewards of being a veterinarian are far-reaching, Dr. Lairmore points out, noting that veterinarians have an important "dual role" that involves protecting animal and public health. One Health contains such efforts to address human, animal and environmental health, he explains. The Sacramento Bee (Calif.) (free registration) (9/10) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Hippotherapy helps boy with cerebral palsy
Hippotherapy, or horse-assisted physical therapy, has not only improved Ryan Woods' sensory perception and strength, but also makes him happy, according to his mother, Michelle, who is active in Southern Tier Alternative Therapies, a nonprofit organization in New York that offers horse therapy to people with disabilities. "Hippotherapy has helped Ryan build trunk control, the warmth of the horse relaxes the high tone that he has in his legs and the gait of the horse provides both sensory perception as well as mimicking the gait of a person, meaning the rider will gain strength by the side-top side, up-and-down, and back-and forth motions," she said. • Pet-shaming Web posts distract from real behavior issues
Posting pictures of pets behaving badly on the Internet may be funny, but it distracts people from behavior problems, which can pose a serious issue, writes veterinarian Emily Coatney-Smith. She adds that intolerable behavior is a primary cause of abandonment and sometimes contributes to the decision to euthanize a pet. Research the right pet for your lifestyle, properly train animals and address poor behavior correctly to avoid problems later, Dr. Coatney-Smith advises. • Service dogs for veterans with PTSD no longer covered, VA says
Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder are no longer eligible for funds to obtain a service dog, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. "Although we do not disagree with some commenters' subjective accounts that mental health service dogs have improved the quality of their lives, VA has not yet been able to determine that these dogs provide a medical benefit to veterans with mental illness," the agency wrote.
