| | - Stress, alcohol, food choices cause college freshmen to gain weight
College freshmen can gain weight during their first semester on campus as they transition from eating what's served at home to making their own dietary choices, says registered dietitian Joan Sarge Blake. USA TODAY (8/30) - Choose natural-food sources for resveratrol, dietitian says
Resveratrol, found in grapes and nuts, has been linked to health benefits, and registered dietitian Mary-Jo Sawyer writes that it's is best to get the antioxidant through natural food sources rather than from supplements. He lists other simple exercises that work on core strength and balance, including dancing while getting dressed, contracting and holding abdominal muscles while driving and doing a few pushups on the bed at night. A federal program that provides fresh produce as free snacks to schools in low-income areas would be altered to allow frozen, canned and dried foods under legislation being considered in Congress. Farmers and many nutrition professionals are pushing to continue the use of only fresh fruits and vegetables. Frozen-food advocates, however, say frozen options are just as nutritious and cost less. Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) (8/29) - Stuffed zucchini rounds
This gluten- and dairy-free recipe features zucchini cut into rounds and stuffed with a meat mixture, then topped with tomatoes and dairy-free cheese.
