  • Recombinant equine virus jumps from zebras to polar bears
After polar bears at Wuppertal Zoo in Germany became severely ill and died, necropsy results confirmed they were infected with a recombinant strain of equine herpesvirus carried by the zoo's zebras. The presence of so many species from around the world sometimes allows for viruses to jump between species in zoos, and EHV1 has caused problems in other facilities among black bears, guinea pigs and Thomson's gazelles. • Research dispels notion that cats harm human health
Cats may have been wrongly accused of exposing owners to toxoplasma gondii, a parasite implicated in brain cancer by some research. New research has found no correlation between cat ownership and increased risk of any cancer and in fact found a decreased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma among people who owned dogs or cats. It's more likely that humans contract the parasite from contaminated soil, produce, or raw or undercooked meat. Discovery (8/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Pneumonia isn't just a cold-weather ailment
Many owners might not consider pneumonia when their pet starts coughing or acting lethargic in the summer, but veterinarian Ann Hohenhaus writes that pneumonia can be caused by several conditions and may occur any time of the year. Asthma, stomach bloat and megaesophagus are some of the maladies that can lead to pneumonia in pets, and Dr. Hohenhaus explains that intensive treatment may be needed to deal with pneumonia. • What to do when dogs fight
Fights can break out between dogs in the same household over territory or owner attention, or even if one animal is sick or injured, and well-meaning owners who try to intervene may end up getting seriously hurt, writes veterinarian Jenna Arnaiz. Safer ways to break up dogfights include spraying the dogs with water or citronella and covering them with a blanket, according to Dr. Arnaiz. All dogs that have been in a fight should be evaluated for injuries by a veterinarian, she notes. The Seattle Times/Tails of Seattle blog (8/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Soring horses: Unethical practice making horses suffer
The Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration begins today, and officials say they will be enforcing strict anti-soring protocols to protect the health of the horses. The practice of soring involves someone deliberately causing pain to artificially exaggerate the leg motion of a horse's gait. It is commonly used on "big lick" Tennessee Walking Horses, but other gaited horses may also suffer from this practice. It has always been unethical, and it's been illegal since 1970, but it has by no means been eliminated. Want to learn more about soring and how to stop it? View AVMA's resources on horse soring.
