Researchers at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine developed an injectable recombinant form of Newcastle disease, a poultry virus, that kills human prostate cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. An estimated 238,590 cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed among U.S. men this year, and 29,720 patients are expected to die of the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. Newcastle disease does not pose a threat to humans, but it is of serious economic concern in the poultry industry. Virginia Tech (4/8), RTT News (4/9) - Tool designed to shed light on feline cardiac health, quality of life
Tufts University veterinarians Lisa Freeman and John Rush have developed a cardiac health questionnaire and scoring system for use in cats, and they say it helps veterinarians and owners start conversations about overall cat health in addition to providing an accurate assessment of feline cardiac disease. Symptoms of feline cardiac disease are subtle because cats are adept at masking their symptoms, Dr. Freeman says. She says the Cats Assessment Tool for Cardiac Health gives veterinarians another way to refine their assessment of feline health. The research was published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. PhysOrg.com (4/8) - Research and education help keep watch on the plague
The CDC considers the pathogen that causes plague a Category A bioterrorism agent. The CDC has developed a rapid dipstick test that diagnoses plague from a small amount of blood or urine and supported an effort to educate traditional healers in Ugandan villages about the symptoms of plague and other infectious diseases so people can get life-saving diagnoses and treatment.
