H7N9, the influenza strain that has killed nine people in China in recent weeks, may be growing more virulent, said Richard Webby of the World Health Organization. "If this is let spread from where it is now, it will evolve further. That's what viruses do," he said. Although human-to-human transmission hasn't been seen, scientists have uncovered signs of genetic diversity in the strain. Researchers continue to try to isolate the environmental sources of infection, but they need more data on the lives of China's birds in markets, on farms and in the wild, according to Maria Zambon, director of the U.K.'s national influenza center. Veterinarian Lynn Miller says owners who jump in the ocean to go after a dog that may have been swept out are unnecessarily risking their own lives and may make the situation worse for their pets. "You're not going to save your dog by risking your own life," Dr. Miller says. "It does your dog no favors in the end if he comes back and you're dead." Since November, five people have perished trying to save their pets from Northern California waters. Dr. Miller says dogs' instincts, natural swimming ability and insulated bodies will usually ensure they make it back to land. If not, rescue workers are well-equipped to save a pet trapped in water. The Washington Post/The Associated Press (4/9) - Veterinarian is owner's best resource for parasite prevention
Veterinarian Ernie Ward explains the reasons veterinarians are the most reliable resource for pet parasite prevention products. Fleas, whipworms and heartworms are just a few of the parasites that threaten pets. Veterinarians recommend products based on safety, reliability, geography and the lifestyle of the pet, and they can provide important information about correctly applying the products and how they work. ChicagoNow.com/Steve Dale's Pet World blog (4/9) - Do cats experience a sense of self?
A viral online video that seems to indicate cats are capable of experiencing "mirror self-awareness" falls short of proving that felines have a true sense of self-identity, according to this analysis based on the research of University at Albany psychologist Gordon Gallup. While a handful of animals -- including primates, dolphins and elephants -- are able to recognize themselves in the mirror, the more likely explanation is that the tuxedo cat in the video is expressing defensive behavior, Dan Nosowitz writes. - AVMA explains recommendations on Internet practice
Texas veterinarian Ronald Hines is suing in federal court to change state laws prohibiting him from diagnosing and recommending treatment for animals via the Internet. Rules in Texas and other states that are based on model regulations from the AVMA do not allow online veterinary practice. AVMA President Dr. Douglas Aspros said technology may one day allow some safe practice of veterinary medicine online, but not yet. "The rules are not there to protect the vet," Dr. Aspros said. "They're there to protect the patient." The Washington Post/The Associated Press (4/9) - Unusual therapy animals make patients of all ages smile
According to the AVMA, therapy animals enhance people's physical, social, cognitive and emotional function, but what's important to the patients who encounter Napoleon the alpaca and Rojo the llama is that the animals make them smile. Lori Gregory of Mtn Peaks Therapy Llamas and Alpacas in Vancouver, Wash., brings the pair to visit Providence Child Center in Oregon and other health care facilities, and she calls the outreach an "addiction." Social worker Kelly Schmidt expressed gratitude: "I never realized the power animals have to bring healing and joy to people like this."
