Ohio district seeks funds to fix troubled cloud-computing system
Thomas Czajkowski, the new chief information officer of the Columbus, Ohio, school district, says he has a solution to fix a problematic cloud-computing system that the district launched in 2008. Educators say the existing system is so slow that computers can take as long as three hours to turn on, amid crashes and freezing. Now, officials are hoping that a November levy request to replace hardware, enhance servers and update software will help the system run more smoothly. The Columbus Dispatch (Ohio) (8/4)

La. district adopts bring-your-own-device programs for two high schools
Two high schools in a Louisiana parish will launch bring-your-own-technology programs under a school board decision to allow an exemption from a policy that bans the use of cellphones on campus unless there is an emergency. Chad Troxclair, principal of one of the schools, said he expects some growing pains as students begin using devices, such as smartphones and laptops, for classroom purposes only, but he said he anticipates success for the program based on past experiences with iPads in school.
