Yosemite works to prevent another hantavirus outbreak
Fourteen percent of deer mice in California's Yosemite National Park carry the Sin Nombre strain of hantavirus, which infected 10 people and killed three in the park last year, and Yosemite has taken precautionary measures to help prevent another outbreak. In addition to increased cleaning of lodgings and warnings posted, Yosemite also tore down 91 of the tent cabins that harbored the mice. How do you know when it's time to say goodbye?
In an effort to assist other pet owners struggling with end-of-life issues regarding their animals, Tina Ferner developed a package of information designed provide guidance for decisions during a pet's final days. Ferner consulted with veterinarian Alice Villalobos, a founding member of Veterinary Cancer Society who developed an end-of-life assessment for owners. "The scale offers some objectivity while remaining sensitive to the caregiver's wishes," Dr. Villalobos writes on her website. "It will relieve guilt feelings and engender the support of the veterinary team to actively help in the care and decision-making for end of life." The Blade (Toledo, Ohio) (7/8)

Goats groom airport grounds while helping endangered species
For the past five years, San Francisco International Airport has brought in goats to clear brush near a runway to prevent fires and protect nearby homes. It's an eco-friendly plan not only because machinery is not needed, but also because it allows the clearing to proceed without disturbing two endangered species. Goats R Us supplies some 400 goats as well as a herder and a border collie to keep them in line, and the crew takes about two weeks to clear the area. The Huffington Post/The Associated Press (7/5)
