Livestock transport trucks carry devastating swine virus, too
Veterinary researchers who collected samples from 669 trailers for transporting livestock at seven slaughter facilities in the Midwest found 17% of trucks had trailers contaminated with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, and contamination was widespread at some sites, with up to 69% of arriving trailers contaminated with the virus that poses a serious threat to young piglets. For each arriving trailer contaminated with PEDV, 1.2 departing trailers carried the virus, according to the research. Reuters (7/30)

How scientists determine the age of wild animals
Determining the age of wild animals can be a challenge without the use of X-rays or postmortem biological markers, but there are some tricks, according to experts. Physical characteristics that provide clues vary among species, but they may include tooth wear, facial flanges and wrinkles in some primate species and hair characteristics and muscle tone in big cats. Fish present a tougher challenge because aging requires postmortem evaluation of an ear bone, and the relevant marker isn't present in fish that live in the tropics. National Geographic News (7/30)

Mistakes can set the stage for improvement
Mistakes can provide valuable learning opportunities, but the first step is to accept responsibility for the problem, Lee Polevoi writes.
