Zoonotic Heartland virus identified in lone star tick
The newly identified Heartland virus, which causes symptoms in humans similar to ehrlichiosis, was identified in 1 in 500 lone star ticks tested in Missouri, according to new research. Two Missouri farmers were hospitalized with serious illness from the virus in 2009, prompting researchers to test 56,428 ticks looking for the source of the virus. HealthDay News (7/22)

Do dolphins use names? Study suggests they might
Researchers report that individual dolphins respond vocally when they hear a whistle that is associated with them, much like a human responding to his or her name. Previous research suggested that dolphin individuals have a certain identifying sound akin to a name. The current study played those sounds to the associated individuals, finding that the dolphins vocally responded to their own sounds but not those of others. Parrots have demonstrated similar behavior, and the researchers think studying the evolution of communication in animals will shed light on human communication too. BBC (7/22)

Balding cat needs to see a veterinarian
When an older cat starts licking the hair off her abdomen and hind legs, it's time for some expert help, according to veterinarian Laural Casler. An underlying health problem such as fleas, environmental allergens or a skin infection could be causing the cat to lick so aggressively, and a visit to the veterinarian can assess these possibilities. If a physical condition is not found, Dr. Casler says behavior modification including anxiety treatment and increased play may help. The Baltimore Sun (7/22)

S. Africa sparks debate with proposed sale of rhino horn stockpile
In an effort to stem the rampant rhino poaching that threatens to render the species extinct within the next few decades, South African officials have proposed selling the country's massive stockpile of rhino horn. Supporters say the move would flood the market, forcing prices down and thus removing the financial gain poachers seek. Opponents say the plan is naive and could backfire, possibly increasing demand. Is a SIMPLE 401(k) the right retirement plan for your business?
SIMPLE 401(k) plans, which are available for companies with fewer than 100 employees, are more demanding to administer than SIMPLE IRA plans, but they can also let you make larger contributions, Bonnie Lee writes. Given their complexity, however, noncompliance is a major risk, and making mistakes can lead to large penalties. Fox Business Small Business Center (7/19)

At AVMA's convention: We're all connected
Veterinarians gathered at AVMA's Annual Convention in Chicago for valued education opportunities, but they also enjoyed the chance to connect with colleagues at a variety of social events, according to AVMA CEO Dr. Ron DeHaven. One highlight of the event, according to Dr. DeHaven, was the Animal Connections: Our Journey Together exhibit, which sheds light on the many ways veterinarians improve the lives of people and animals, from their work in food safety and security to biomedical research. The exhibit will be on display around the area through Aug. 9 and is "the convention's gift to Chicago," Dr. DeHaven said. He also discussed the importance of preventive care and special initiatives designed to help get more cats to the veterinarian's office. WGN-AM (Chicago) (7/20)
