Poisoned meatballs pose danger to pets, people in Calif. neighborhoods A dachshund named Oskar who was placed in a medically induced coma after eating meatballs poisoned with strychnine died Thursday, according to Deb Campbell of San Francisco Animal Care & Control. Hundreds of tainted meatballs have been found in two San Francisco neighborhoods, apparently left in areas visited by dogs. Animals that eat the meatballs should be rushed to a veterinarian for immediate treatment, and people who see the bait should call 911 and avoid handling it because the poison can be absorbed across skin tissue. The intestinal virus is harmless to humans but highly contagious in domestic cats. Symptoms typically appear two to 10 days after exposure, and with treatment, the mortality rate drops from 90% to about 20%, said veterinarian Leonard Sigdestad. San Jose Mercury News (Calif.) Authorities in Twin Falls, Idaho, have seized 12 horses in neglect and abuse cases so far this year, compared with three last year and two in 2011. Veterinarians provide guidance and care for animals until their futures can be determined, but lack of resources and the financial strain of owning horses pose significant challenges to caring for and placing the animals. The creatures live for decades almost never surfacing from their underground homes, and they do not get cancer, something that makes them particularly interesting to researchers. The animals, native to the dry East African plains and first identified by 19th-century German naturalist Eduard Rüppell, breed like ants or termites with a single breeding queen. They also do not display many signs of aging seen in other species including vascular changes and loss of fecundity over years of breeding.
