What is standing in the way of education technology? A recent report identifies six challenges preventing effective, widespread implementation of education technology. Among them, according to the New Media Consortium report, are the lack of adequate professional development, resistance to change and competition from new models of schooling. Other challenges include obstacles to providing informal learning, failures of personalized learning and a lack of technology-driven and effective formative assessments. T.H.E. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., ranking member of the Communications and Technology Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Jessica Rosenworcel, a member of the Federal Communications Commission, write about the need to overhaul the federal E-Rate program. They call for the creation of E-Rate 2.0 and set high goals for the revised program, such as installing broadband at 100 megabits per 1,000 students in all schools by 2015 and 1 gigabit by the end of the decade. (6/4) | U.S. students use social media to connect, give back Students in the U.S. are connecting with Darfuri refugees in eastern Chad through Pazocalo, a social media website constructed for Darfuris, advocates and students. Using the website, students are able to communicate directly and build relationships. Students in the U.S. also are using the technology to connect and collaborate to get necessary supplies and resources to Chad.
