  • PEDV proves tough to control, lethal for piglets
The porcine epidemic diarrhea virus that's new to North America has spread to 13 states and more than 100 swine since it was detected last month, in an outbreak that's proving tougher to control than experts first thought. The illness hasn't been a serious issue among adult pigs in the U.S., but the mortality rate for piglets ranges from 50% to 100%. Experts say there is no risk to humans, but the virus continues to raise concerns among pork producers. NBC News/Reuters (6/19) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Denver Zoo bids farewell to aging lion with lymphoma
Denver Zoo officials said a sad goodbye Wednesday to their South African lion Rian, who at 15 was battling an aggressive form of lymphoma. Veterinarians at the zoo and Colorado State University were treating Rian with chemotherapy developed for domestic cats, a first that they had hoped would help develop a protocol for other big cats with cancer. "Originally we did see incremental levels of improvement in Rian, but in the last couple days it became evident his quality of life was quickly diminishing and we decided it was time to say goodbye," said veterinarian Betsy Stringer. "We hope some of what we learned with Rian will help another lion down the road." The Denver Post (6/19), KCNC-TV (Denver)/The Associated Press (6/20) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Ark. chicken tests positive for H7N7 avian influenza
Officials in Arkansas have confirmed that a Scott County chicken has tested positive for H7N7 low-pathogenic avian influenza, which is contracted through contact with infected birds or contaminated water. The state Livestock and Poultry Commission has enacted a quarantine for poultry within a 6.2-mile radius of the case and will work with the USDA to coordinate additional testing. There is no threat to public health, state officials say. SeattlePI.com/The Associated Press (6/18) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Many animals may be smarter than they get credit for, studies show
Chickens can plan ahead and may have better spatial skills than young children; sheep can recognize colors and shapes; pigs and monkeys can use mirrors to find hidden food; and even flies can remember their destinations and get there despite distractions, according to a variety of studies from the past few decades. "Finding sophisticated learning and awareness in animals can alter the way people think about the species and may result in better welfare in the long run," said researcher Donald Broom.
