Soda ban may have biggest impact on overweight, obese youths
A portion-size limit on sodas probably would reduce calorie intake by consumers, especially among overweight and obese youths, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers said that low-income consumers would be no more likely to be affected by a ban on soda size limits than would be those with a higher income. RDs provide nutrition programs for employee wellness plans
Companies can add nutrition counseling to employee wellness plans with corporate programs run by registered dietitians, writes Krista Yoder Latortue, CEO of Family Food. She writes that study data show that every dollar spent for nutrition counseling with a dietitian resulted in $4 in savings. Also, most insurers recognize RDs as providers, so employees also may be able to get low-cost counseling as part of a health plan. The Huffington Post (6/12)

Post-meal walking offers glucose benefits in adults with prediabetes
Taking a moderately paced, 15-minute walk about half an hour after each meal was more effective than taking one 45-minute walk in the morning or evening in regulating blood glucose levels in adults with prediabetes, according to a study in Diabetes Care. Researchers also found that walking after dinner was better at curbing blood glucose rates compared with post-meal strolling in the morning and in the afternoon. More research needed on home-based weight-loss programs for children
While some home-based interventions on child-obesity prevention increased fruit and vegetable intake and physical activity, none of them had an impact on weight or body mass index, a review showed. In all six studies, the number of children and teens classified as overweight or obese was similar between the home-based intervention and comparison groups. The findings appear in the journal Pediatrics. Reuters (6/12)

Nutrition-label confusion presents opportunity for companies
A report by Acosta Sales and Marketing cites growing consumer interest in health and wellness, but says consumers are confused about nutrition labels and that there is little awareness of ranking systems such as Guiding Stars and Nutrition IQ. "Confusion about health ratings and the propensity of consumers to use the Internet to find information about healthy eating gives [consumer packaged goods] companies and retailers the opportunity to help shoppers solve the health and wellness puzzle," according to Acosta.
