  • Canadian brings rare zoonotic disease back from Thailand
A 45-year-old woman from Canada was diagnosed with Zika virus, a flavivirus first identified in Ugandan monkeys in 1947, after returning from a trip to Thailand. The difficult-to-diagnose case was finally solved by the CDC laboratory at Fort Collins, Colo., and public health officials said it served as an important reminder to clinicians that people may pick up rare pathogens while traveling. The patient reported sustaining insect bites while in Thailand. She recovered after suffering symptoms including fever, rash, severe back pain and fatigue. • Greener cows? Study finds some naturally emit less methane
A study of 25 dairy cows found that regardless of diet, some cows naturally produce less methane than others. The findings are generating interest among those who want to reduce production of greenhouse gases, such as methane. An expanded study of 1,400 cattle is planned to further evaluate the impact of genetics on methane production, findings that could pave the way for new breeding practices. • Therapy dolphin's surgery is one of a kind
A dolphin in Florida underwent a procedure never before used in the species to help her breathe easier. The 29-year-old therapy dolphin named Sarah, who specializes in making children with disabilities smile, underwent a procedure similar to human angioplasty in which her airway was dilated with a balloon-like device. After her trainers noticed Sarah was having difficulty breathing, a CT scan showed her airway was 80% blocked. Following the procedure, "we immediately got her back into the water and we immediately saw that she could breathe better," said veterinarian Robert Stevens. • Husband-and-wife veterinary team finding success
Veterinarians Elizabeth Maimon and Scott MacDonald met on their first day of veterinary school and married two years later. They've since opened a small-animal clinic where Dr. Maimon focuses on the medical and public health aspects of the practice and Dr. MacDonald handles surgery and radiology. "Probably fighting the clock is the most difficult aspect of having our own practice," Dr. Maimon said. They have two sons. "Our son may need to be picked up at daycare and an emergency patient arrives. But it all works out. I can't imagine doing anything else." • Why the Texas court ruling on pets as property is good for animals
When the Texas Supreme Court upheld an 1891 ruling that pets are property, it disagreed with an appeals court ruling that opened the door to allowing owners to seek sentimental damages in cases of unintended pet injury or death. When announcing its decision, the high court cited a brief from animal welfare organizations that warned of a host of ramifications for allowing sentiment-based damages in pet cases. Such a move would fuel a massive increase in litigation, and "the results would be fewer free clinics, fewer shelters, defensive veterinary medicine leading to higher prices," and families who can no longer afford essential preventive care for their animals, writes George Will.
