The treats were recalled after routine analysis in Colorado showed possible Salmonella contamination, which would place pets and humans at risk. PetMD.com (3/14) - Zoo in Md. has hope for elephant with endotheliotropic herpesvirus
Veterinarians and handlers at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore are aggressively treating Samson, a nearly 5-year-old African elephant, for endotheliotropic herpesvirus. The often fatal disease is typically found in young Asian elephants, but the strain Samson is infected with appears to be less dangerous to African elephants, and zoo curator and elephant manager Mike McClure says Samson's training has helped facilitate his treatment. Veterinarians put Samson on a regimen that includes 40 times the dose of herpes medicine used in humans. His case is expected to provide important information about the disease. The Baltimore Sun (3/13) - Veterinarians explore the cause of Timmy the tapir's clumsiness
Palm Beach Zoo resident Timmy, a 300-pound Baird's tapir, will undergo an MRI and CT scan in an effort to find the cause of his clumsiness. Veterinarians say Timmy, born at the zoo and raised by human handlers after his mother rejected him, may have been born with a condition that makes him fall down frequently, and it's also possible that his brain is growing more quickly than his skull. Veterinarians have zeroed in on an issue at the junction between his skull and vertebrae, and officials hope to know more after the imaging tests. The Palm Beach Post (Fla.) - New saber-tooth cat genus surfaces in Fla.
Researchers in Florida have identified a new genus and species of saber-tooth cat that's related to the well-known Smilodon fatalis. A collection of 5-million-year-old fossils led to the identification of the big cat, which is believed to have evolved in North America. "When people think of saber-toothed cats, they think of it as just one thing, as if the famous tar pit saber-toothed cat was the only species, when in fact, it was an almost worldwide radiation of cats that lasted over 10 million years and probably had a total of about 20 valid species," said Richard Hulbert of the University of Florida. ScienceDaily (3/14) - FBI tactical dog lauded after making "the ultimate sacrifice"
A Czech German shepherd named Ape had been on tactical duty with the FBI for about two weeks when he was shot and killed by a gunman suspected in the deaths of four people. "We were trying to do everything we could to try to save its life," said veterinarian Emily Green, part of a team of clinicians who worked to save the dog. Ape died soon after arriving at the clinic, and he will be buried and memorialized at FBI headquarters. "Ape was doing what he was trained to do and made the ultimate sacrifice for his team," according to an FBI statement. "His actions were heroic." This fiscal year, government-guaranteed loans have increased 6% compared with fiscal 2012. However, it's not clear whether that growth will continue because the effect of the sequester is not yet known. Bloomberg Businessweek (3/14) | Policy Watch | | | | - Senators push to make VMLRP payments tax-exempt

The Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program Enhancement Act would make payments received under the program and related state initiatives tax-exempt. Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., a sponsor of the bill, called the program a "critical tool to expanding access to veterinary care" and said it would benefit farmers and ranchers.
