Veterinarian Ralph Richardson, dean of Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, explains the factors behind the school's growing number of out-of-state students. The school designates 45 spots in the incoming class for Kansas residents, down from 50 since 2000, and Kansas residents made up 48.6% of the school in 2008 and 39.7% in 2012, Dr. Richardson said. A shrinking number of in-state applicants and lower entrance exam scores contribute to the decrease. The school also has programs guaranteeing some seats for students from particular parts of the country and the world, such as China. The Topeka Capital-Journal (Kan.) "This is completely new territory," Dr. Coke said. "We're setting the background now; we're trying to expand the knowledge base." - Be vigilant about aging cat's health
To maximize the length and quality of an aging cat's life, veterinarian Julie Damron writes that owners should schedule semiannual veterinary exams and have regular lab work and routine dental care performed. Be sure vaccinations are current, feed a high-quality diet to provide essential nutrients and maintain a healthy weight, and keep cats indoors, Dr. Damron advises. Owners must remain vigilant because cats are good at concealing health issues, and subtle changes may be difficult for owners to detect, according to Dr. Damron. The Record (Stockton, Calif.)
