A young royal penguin found starving, dehydrated and emaciated on a New Zealand beach, more than 1,000 miles from home, is being treated by Wellington Zoo veterinarian Lisa Argilla. Royal penguins live on Macquarie Island in the southwest corner of the Pacific, and only four members of the species have been found on New Zealand's shores since 1880. The penguin is improving slowly, but Dr. Argilla gives a guarded prognosis. "We're fighting against time. His organs could fail before we win," she said.
