  • Shopping, meal planning are part of 2013 food trends, RD says
Food trends for 2013 are about more than the food itself, registered dietitian Bonnie Taub-Dix writes, citing areas such as the people who do the shopping, planning meals ahead of time, stocking up on frozen fruits and vegetables, and portion-controlled dinners. Taub-Dix writes that she hopes more families eat meals together because parents can set examples for good eating habits and have an effect on what their children choose. • Nutritionist helps people cook for children with cancer
Holistic nutritionist Danielle Cook Navidi says she learned how to cook for a child who has cancer after her son was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, when finding foods he liked and could tolerate became a challenge. She teaches free classes on cooking for children with cancer, and wrote a cookbook, "Happily Hungry: Smart Recipes for Kids with Cancer," that reflects her back-to-basics approach. • Detox dishes, chewing included
While many cleansing or detox diets are offered in liquid form, solid dishes can be made with the same beneficial ingredients, including ginger, tamarind and coconut. Dishes including tamarind shrimp, yellow split peas with coconut and ginger-lamb coconut curry are nutritious, tasty and may confer diet-boosting benefits, according to this article. Science & Research
  • Weight-loss counseling rates decline in the U.S.
The likelihood of receiving weight-loss counseling during primary care visits decreased by 41% among Americans in 2007-2008, compared with 1995-1996, despite rising obesity rates, a study in Medical Care indicated. Researchers also found the odds of weight-loss counseling dropped 46% for patients with hypertension and 59% for those with diabetes. • Experts cite emotional eating as weight-loss barrier
In a survey of 1,328 licensed psychologists, 43% of respondents mentioned emotional eating as a weight-loss hurdle and 44% said understanding and regulating emotions and behaviors associated with weight is key to effective weight loss. Cognitive therapy, problem-solving and mindfulness are good weight-loss strategies, according to more than 70% of the respondents. The findings will be published in Consumer Reports magazine. • Study: Adding calcium and vitamin D to diet boosts body-fat loss
Calcium and vitamin D supplements added to an energy-restrictive diet led to more body-fat loss over 12 weeks compared with just the diet alone, according to a study in Nutrition Journal. The Chinese researchers said there was no difference in overall body weight changes between the study groups. NutraIngredients (1/10) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • RD: Water aerobics can be a good workout for weight loss
Do not discount the weight-loss value of water aerobics, even though it seems low-impact and a bit slow, dietitian Nicole German writes. The workout is great for people who are obese or recovering from an injury, and activities such as water kickboxing and aqua jogging can be active calorie burners. • Dietitians dish on good and bad of school nutrition rules
Federal nutrition standards for schools are a step in the right direction but more can be done, including nutrition education for staff and students, nutrition experts say. Some students said they did not get enough to eat under calorie limits in the rules, but registered dietitian Deborah Beauvais says the calorie targets are written "for the center of the bell curve," which means some students will have too much food and others too little. Countless studies have found that families that eat together eat better and share more than a meal; they share conversations and their lives."
