  • London Zoo begins massive animal count
Every year, as part of its licensing requirements, the London Zoo conducts a census of its 17,500-plus animal residents, and this year's count is underway. The zoo added some occupants last year that will be tallied in the census, including an endangered white-naped mangabey monkey, a black-and-white colobus monkey, and male and female endangered Sumatran tigers who will hopefully breed. • Veterinarian says he's ready to take Congress by storm
Large-animal veterinarian Ted Yoho, who just picked up a Florida seat in the House of Representatives, touts his veterinary experience as a major part of what made him tough enough to take on Congress. "Intimidating is going up to a growling Rottweiler and having to squeeze his anal glands, or going up to a stallion that weighs 1,200 pounds and telling him you're going to take his testicles off," said Dr. Yoho, a Republican. "That's intimidating. I think I can handle Congress." National Journal (1/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Dog helps guide blind brother through N.H. snow
Dogs at the Muddy Paw kennel for sled dogs take to the snow each winter to help cover the cost of food and care at the New Hampshire facility. Poncho and his brother Gonzo, who is blind, are among the animals who hit the trails, and Gonzo's enthusiasm for the outings, where he seems to rely on cues from Poncho, has not been dampened by his inability to see. "Gonzo always wants to go," said musher AJ Norton. WMUR-TV (Manchester, N.H.) (1/2) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Let employees take over key duties to spur business growth
To allow a small business to grow, owners must be able to hand key responsibilities to trusted employees, writes Curt Finch. When passing on duties, clearly explain the goals and expectations to the employee, and get it in writing so you and the employee can measure productivity. "As a business owner it can be difficult to let someone else take care of your baby, but it is almost always in the [business'] best interest to create a team with diverse and useful skills to improve processes," Finch writes. • U.S. Economic Census: It's Important
The U.S. Census Bureau has begun sending out surveys to businesses across the nation as part of its regular U.S. Economic Census, which occurs every five years. For veterinarians who receive the survey, this is an opportunity to tell the government how important our profession is, including how much it impacts the nation's economy. The AVMA feels this is so important that AVMA CEO Dr. Ron DeHaven recorded a video message just to encourage veterinarians to fill out and return the survey. View the video or read the latest AVMA@Work blog post to learn more about the importance of the survey. LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
