  • Zoo's latest primate addition delivered via C-section
Zoo Atlanta welcomed a baby orangutan via cesarean section Thursday, 10 days short of its projected delivery date. The C-section was planned because the mother's last infant died during birth. Zoo veterinarian Hayley Murphy worked with obstetricians Brad Moore and Bryan Jewell, who performed the surgery. Mother and baby are both recovering well. • Mexico culls 300,000 birds in effort to isolate avian influenza
The H7N3 avian influenza virus has surfaced at two egg farms in Mexico, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health, or OIE, resulting in the culling of some 300,000 birds in an attempt to isolate the outbreak. "Timely notification from the farmer and surveillance activities allowed immediate depopulation of the two affected production units, reason why both outbreaks identified are closed," Mexican authorities said in a report. • Releasing pet fish threatens native ecosystems
Pet fish and the plants they are housed with pose a serious threat to native species when they are introduced into marine waters, according to a new report that finds representatives of 102 aquarium species enter the U.S. through two California ports each year. Thirteen of those species have been introduced to California's ocean waters, and more than two-thirds are established there. Aquarium species are particularly prone to becoming invasive in a new ecosystem, experts say. "We believe that that is in part due to the fact that they have to be so hardy to be able to survive the trade," said University of California, Davis, professor Susan Williams. • What is it about pandas that leaves us smitten?
Panda "cuteness" is actually a phenomenon in our minds triggered by the animals' appearance, which awakens our innate parenting instincts and a flood of positive emotions, experts say. Panda morphology packs in nearly every adorable punch possible from their large black eyes to their round bodies and what seems to be toddler-like behavior. However, pandas in the wild are decidedly mysterious, according to longtime field researcher George Schaller. They are "rarely romantic, don't cuddle and are certainly not like the pandas of our minds," Schaller said. National Public Radio/The Two-Way blog (1/10) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Snake bites: Treatment and prevention
Florida has about 40 snake species, four of which are poisonous, so dog owners must know how to handle an encounter between their pet and a snake. Training dogs to avoid snakes by teaching them the "leave it" command is the best prevention, but bites do occur, and veterinarian David Randall explains the treatment and prognosis. Non-venomous snake bites are managed with antibiotics, Dr. Randall said, but if the appropriate anti-venom can be obtained, even victims of bites from poisonous snakes can recover. • Preventive medicine is best for pets and owners
Dog and cat owners are trending toward fewer veterinary visits for their pets, according to the AVMA's latest U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook. Because preventive care helps keeps pets healthy and prevents untimely deaths, author Steve Dale argues improving utilization of preventive care should be among animal lovers' goals for 2013. Among Dale's other goals for the year are supporting what he calls "sensible dangerous dog laws," rather than those that focus on a single breed, and fighting pet obesity.
