 | | - Mass., Ohio partner to develop online tool for teachers
An online "instructional improvement system" is being developed for teachers by the education departments in Ohio and Massachusetts. The tool will allow teachers to individualize instruction for students, using resources, such as lesson plans and tests, available online. The new system should be available to teachers in both states in the 2013-14 school year, and Race to the Top grants are being used to fund the project. Equipment-makers are eagerly preparing for the introduction of next-generation Wi-Fi, with a number of components already capable of supporting the gigabit speeds that the pending 802.11ac standard promises. Ratification of the IEEE protocol is expected by early 2014 at the latest, and the Wi-Fi Alliance is readying beta testing of the technology -- which will support as much as four times the throughput of current networks. Experts say carriers will likely introduce gigabit service in high-density areas before moving on to enterprise-based applications. A project in Canada asks social media users to "donate" their Facebook and Twitter accounts to help publicize cases involving missing children. When a child is missing, participating users' accounts automatically post updates with information about the incident, helping to raise awareness and to encourage people to report sightings.
