  • Many people don't know all risks of obesity, survey shows
More than 70% of people surveyed correctly identified heart disease and diabetes as two serious consequences of obesity, but only about 15% mentioned arthritis and 7% said cancer, according to a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The survey showed that about 25% of people said it is possible to be healthy while very overweight, and 52% said they had talked with a physician about the health risks of being overweight. • FDA shifts focus to prevention in proposed food-safety rules
The FDA has proposed food-safety rules that would subject those who process food to stricter monitoring and require produce farmers to keep deadly bacteria off their fields. All aspects of growing and harvesting produce would be covered by the proposed standards, which represent a shift toward disease prevention, Bill Tomson writes. • Experts ID enzyme that may contribute to weight gain in older women
Estrogen seems to suppress the activity of the fat-regulating Aldh1a1 enzyme, which may explain why postmenopausal women, who have lower levels of the hormone, tend to gain weight, an animal study found. Targeting the enzyme may lead to the discovery of new obesity treatments specifically for women, researchers wrote in the journal Diabetes. Patient-satisfaction scores for food quality have increased to the high 90th percentile since Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Upper Michigan switched to room-service dining in August, officials say. The hospital uses dietary clerks to take orders in patient rooms, and meals are delivered in less than 45 minutes. "The traditional hospital food is something that we don't want anymore," says Lynne Gussert of Materials Management and Food and Nutritional Services. WLUC-TV (Negaunee, Mich.)
