  • Researchers rejuvenate mature immune cells
Japanese researchers turned mature immune T-cells into T-cells that replicated more, had longer lifespans and were better able to target diseased cells, according to two studies published in the journal Cell Stem Cell. Researchers converted T-cells from a patient with HIV into pluripotent stem cells in one of the studies. In the other, researchers started with T-cells from a patient with melanoma. Researchers in both studies were able to turn the pluripotent stem cells back into T-cells. "The next step we are going to do is examine whether these regenerated T-cells can selectively kill tumor cells but not other healthy tissues," lead author Dr. Hiroshi Kawamoto said.
