The FUS about arginine methylation in ALS and FTLD

Changes in arginine methylation are linked to the pathogenesis of the two neurodegenerative syndromes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), yet methylation appears to play distinct roles in both.

AgRP neurons: a switch between peripheral carbohydrate and lipid utilization

AgRP/NPY neurons are critical regulators of body weight and food intake. Unexpectedly, AgRP-ablated mice show an obese phenotype, which is linked to altered metabolism in liver, muscle and pancreas.

Pluripotency re-centered around Esrrb

Arginine methylation next to the PY-NLS modulates Transportin binding and nuclear import of FUS

Defective nuclear import of fused in sarcoma (FUS) is linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Arginine methylation of FUS reduces its binding to the nuclear import receptor Transportin leading to cytoplasmic accumulation of methylated FUS in ALS-FUS patient samples.

Hypothalamic AgRP-neurons control peripheral substrate utilization and nutrient partitioning

AgRP-neurons control food intake. Ablation of AgRP-neurons reveals their role in regulating metabolism in peripheral tissues, resulting in changes in the balance of lipid and carbohydrate utilization. Mice lacking AgRP-neurons become obese on regular diet but show reduced body weight gain on high-fat diet.

Wig1 prevents cellular senescence by regulating p21 mRNA decay through control of RISC recruitment

p21 levels in cellular senescence are adjusted, independent of transcription or protein stability, by a novel mechanism that regulates access of Ago2 to the miRNA-targeted p21 mRNA.

Mechanism and functions of membrane binding by the Atg5–Atg12/Atg16 complex during autophagosome formation

The conserved Atg5–Atg12/Atg16 complex is essential for autophagosome formation. In vitro reconstitution experiments reveal how the individual subunits of this complex act to tether membranes and to promote subsequent Atg8 conjugation, a key step in autophagy.

Atp23 biogenesis reveals a chaperone-like folding activity of Mia40 in the IMS of mitochondria

In contrast to all known Mia40 substrates, Atp23 is imported into the mitochondria independently of disulphide-bond formation. Furthermore Mia40 displays chaperone activity, mediating Atp23 folding and preventing its aggregation in vitro.

ROS-mediated vascular homeostatic control of root-to-shoot soil Na delivery in Arabidopsis

A newly discovered defence for plants against salt toxicity is that root reactive oxygen species generated by high soil salinity regulate root–shoot sodium transport, thereby preventing its toxic accumulation in shoots.
