Arizona's state Board for Private Postsecondary Education has authorized Midwestern University's plans to offer a doctor of veterinary medicine program. The school has allotted more than $100 million for the grounds, which will be built starting next year and will feature a 110,000-square-foot academic facility, a 100,000-square-foot clinic for small animals and a 50,000-square-foot large-animal facility. The school, which is seeking AVMA accreditation, plans to bring in its first class in 2014. American City Business Journals/Phoenix (11/7) - Study sheds light on sensitivity of powerful croc, gator jaws
Sensitive pigmented bumps known as integumentary sensor organs give crocodiles and alligators their extraordinary sense of touch in their jaws, according to new research from Vanderbilt University. The ISOs contain mechanoreceptors that respond to vibration and pressure, some so sensitive that they detect pressure human fingertips cannot. The findings shed light on how the animals use their mouths in many ways, from snapping powerfully at prey to carefully carrying hatchlings. - Nov. designated to mark awareness of pet cancer
VPI, the nation's largest pet insurance provider, named November National Pet Cancer Awareness Month starting in 2005, and along with the Animal Cancer Foundation, it seeks to raise awareness about pet cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Cancer was the fourth most common pet claim filed last year with VPI, and lymphoma, skin cancer and spleen cancer topped the list of the 10 cancers most commonly associated with insurance claims. Pet owners should learn the signs of cancer in animals, said Carol McConnell, VPI's chief veterinary medical officer. KHOU-TV (Houston)/Animal Attraction blog (11/6) - Excising rat's tumor requires precision and patience
An external tumor on a rat is usually not cancerous, according to veterinarian Jeff Kahler. However, if it's large enough, the tumor can present serious problems during surgical removal including a massive reduction in circulating blood volume, which can stress the rat's heart. Taking time to individually redirect the blood flow of each vessel supplying the tumor will reduce the chances of overwhelming the heart, Dr. Kahler writes. The Bellingham Herald (Wash.)/The Modesto Bee (Calif.) (11/7) - Veterinarian makes bird nutrition his mission
Veterinarian Joel Murphy, who runs a small-animal veterinary practice and has a passion for avian medicine, emphasizes the importance of good nutrition for pet birds. Basing his information on his study of wild birds, Dr. Murphy has developed diet recommendations for pet birds including feeding fresh vegetables and fruits, water and special pellets. According to Dr. Murphy, many pet birds in his area die prematurely due to malnutrition, a situation he believes can be prevented with owner education. He also recommends weighing birds daily because weight loss can signal illness. Tampa Bay Times (St. Petersburg, Fla.) (11/8) - Dog dropped off anonymously at clinic exposed staff to rabies
Staff members at an Alabama veterinary clinic are undergoing post-exposure rabies prophylaxis after a dog left anonymously at their clinic exposed them to rabies. The chow mix was dropped off in the clinic's enclosed kennel area, and the dog bit one of the employees. As is standard procedure when an animal's owner isn't known, the dog was euthanized and tested for rabies. The test results were positive. Officials are urging the owners to come forward because they could have contracted rabies, which is fatal if untreated. Opelika-Auburn News (Ala.)
