  • Study: Stem cell transplant improves ambulation in injured dogs
Dogs with spinal cord injuries who received stem cell injections were able to walk again, British researchers report. Stem cells derived from olfactory ensheathing cells appeared to trigger nerve regeneration across short distances in the spinal cords of the dogs, restoring function to the hind limbs of some of them. "This is not a cure for spinal cord injury in humans -- that could still be a long way off. But this is the most encouraging advance for some years and is a significant step on the road towards it," said physician Geoffrey Raisman of University College London. • Metabolomics demystifies whale shark blood chemistry
Using metabolomics, researchers found that the blood chemistry marker homarine can serve as an indicator of whale shark health. "This research and its resulting findings are vitally important to ensuring Georgia Aquarium's and the scientific community's care, knowledge, and understanding of not only whale sharks, but similar species of sharks and rays," said veterinarian Greg Bossart, chief veterinary officer and senior vice president of animal health, research and conservation at Georgia Aquarium. Pets with diabetes can be managed long-term in most cases, writes veterinarian Laura Higgins, but even with proper care, some can suffer emergencies including hypoglycemic crisis, hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome and diabetic ketoacidosis. The conditions can be treated, but their occurrence may indicate additional underlying disease. Berthoud Recorder (Colo.) (11/19) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • How Superstorm Sandy affected animals
Veterinarian Ann Hohenhaus relates some stories of how animals weathered Superstorm Sandy, noting that their plight paralleled that of humans. Although New York City encouraged owners to bring their animals with them during evacuations, city shelters recently reported 141 animals still unclaimed in the aftermath of the storm. Dr. Hohenhaus recounts how other animals, including the Chincoteague Island ponies, marine animals at the New York Aquarium, and even two displaced brown pelicans, fared during the storm. Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday season with food, friends, family, and more food. Usually our main concern about Thanksgiving is the effect it might have on our waistlines.
