Researchers using PET with florbetapir discovered that asymptomatic carriers of the presenilin 1 E280A genetic variation, which is linked to the development of early-onset Alzheimer's disease, showed higher florbetapir binding compared with those who did not have the mutation. Beta amyloid plaque started building up at the mean age of 28.2 years, which is about 16 and 21 years earlier than the estimated median ages for the start of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, respectively, according to the study published in The Lancet Neurology.
