A struggling middle school in Washington, D.C., is piloting a new program that allows students to learn online at their own pace. Students participating in the "Teach to One" program are given a "playlist" of assignments and grouped with classmates who are working on similar lessons. The approach is part of a blended-learning strategy that combines online and traditional instruction. "Teach to One" also is being used in five New York schools and two in Chicago. Like a growing number of schools across the country, a Minnesota middle school is experimenting with the flipped classroom approach in some of its classes. Math teacher Ethan Anderson, for example, asks students to watch online videos presenting new skills and math concepts at home. Education officials in Lawrence, Kan., plan to put a bond issue up for voter approval this spring to fund expanded technology offerings for schools. If approved, the new funding would pay for infrastructure to support the increased use of mobile technology on campus, and help ensure students who do not have Internet at home can keep up with tech-based lessons at school. The district also is considering how best to put computer devices in the hands of all its students.
