  • What challenges do schools face in adopting iPads?
In this blog post, education consultant Ben Johnson details the rationale behind his school district's decision to adopt iPads. He also lists the challenges associated with the transition, such as the cost if the devices were lost or damaged. The district decided to have students sign an iPad agreement and offer insurance policies on the devices for $45. While students were expected to return their iPads at the end of each year, students were told that when they graduated, so would their iPads. • Digital tools are available to help students tell stories
This article lists nine available applications intended to enhance storytelling by giving students digital tools they need to become writers, artists and moviemakers. Among them are My StoryMaker, which allows students to develop characters and determine how they interact, and ZooBurst, in which students create virtual 3D pop-up books by writing scripts, recording videos and voice-overs that they combine with their own artwork or free images from the site. They can then watch their work, animated, on screen or even projected into the room using an augmented reality QR code. T.H.E. Journal (10/22) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • States deploy digital resources in different ways
At a recent forum, state leaders described the ways in which they are making the shift to digital education. In Indiana, schools are adopting bring-your-own-device policies and one-to-one technology programs to help eliminate textbooks. The state also has adopted eFlex days, in which students can learn remotely about one time each month. In Utah, officials say the adoption of the Common Core State Standards prompted its focus on digital resources. eSchool News (free registration) (10/19) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story
  • Teachers view tapes of their work to master new skills
Like a football coach guiding players, Mark L'Esperance, an associate professor at East Carolina University, tapes teachers' classroom performances to show them their strengths and weaknesses in applying a new curriculum. Brunswick County Schools in Bolivia, N.C., hired L'Esperance to guide teachers, so they can implement a new curriculum and teaching methods more quickly. "Sometimes teachers learn a concept, but learning it might be different than applying it," said Tina Child, the district's professional-development coordinator. Star-News (Wilmington, N.C.) • BYOD is part of cost-effective plan to introduce digital books
An Ohio school district is considering adopting a bring-your-own device policy to cost-effectively introduce more technology, including digital books, in the classroom. However, officials say the transition will come after they have ensured the schools have the infrastructure in place to support students' use of their own technology. Among the concerns is that the schools' filters handle Web access, rather than students' 4G networks. Middletown Journal (Ohio) (10/20) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • British educators use Twitter to organize reform-minded group
A group of primarily secondary headteachers in Britain, who met on the social media website Twitter, have come together to advocate for education reform. Among other things, the group -- which does not yet have a name -- is advocating for disadvantaged students and for the de-politicization of curriculum and qualifications. The headteachers also are expressing support for more investment in professional development for teachers. The Guardian (London) (10/22) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story
