Infrastructure and access are among the challenges that schools will face when implementing bring-your-own-device programs, according to education-technology directors interviewed in this article. In order to level the playing field for students without access to technology or at-home Internet, one district locates public Wi-Fi access points in the district for students and explores partnerships with companies to provide devices that students can check out at school. eSchool News (free registration) (10/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • Program with iPads takes off with motto "iLearn. iBelieve. We Succeed."
Every fifth-grade student in a Texas elementary school receives an iPad as part of an initiative educators say has helped to engage students in lessons and excite them about learning. The devices -- now being used in some fourth grades as well -- also have helped to transform the classroom, advocates say. "Our children are coming to our schools, and we're telling them to leave their device at the door so we can teach them old-school," said principal Holly Grubbs. "That doesn't do it." • Teachers' role in helping craft schools' technology plans
Teachers should ask school leaders about the vision for technology use in their schools, suggests Nicholas Provenzano, a high-school English teacher and technology-curriculum specialist in Michigan. If one is not provided or in the works, Provenzano writes that teachers then have a responsibility to ask other questions of school leaders about how a vision could be crafted and adhered to by the school. Plans in Florida to build a website intended to help students, teachers and others transition to new academic standards have been stalled following the termination of a contract between the state and a private firm that was hired to create the site. • School uses social media to cover budget shortfall
After receiving $40,000 less than expected from the state, a San Francisco elementary school used the social media website Gofundme.com to fill the shortfall online. So far, the school has raised $34,179 on the site. "A social media fundraising site like Gofundme.com it can be linked up with other social media like Facebook and word about it can get around in different ways and we can have opportunities for people who are less connected with the school to help us in our efforts as well," principal John Simard said.
