Veterinarians at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center performed abdominal surgery on Berlin, the female polar bear who briefly escaped her Lake Superior Zoo enclosure after it flooded this summer. They found evidence of prior abdominal bleeding as well as a necrotic mass. Surgery was performed because Berlin, who now lives at the Como Park Zoo, began acting lethargic and vomiting and an endoscopy, ultrasound and X-rays were inconclusive. Duluth News Tribune (Minn.) University of California, Davis, veterinarians report that Kabang, the dog from the Philippines who lost her nose and upper jaw after she jumped in front of a motorcycle, apparently saving her two human companions, also has heartworm disease and a tumor. Both medical problems must be treated before her facial injury can be addressed, according to UC Davis faculty, and that may take up to six months. Some animal advocates expressed concern that so much effort is being devoted to one animal when so many need help, but they agreed that any outpouring of support for an animal is positive. Dental care is vital to good health for horses because painful teeth and gums can lead to crankiness and an aversion to eating. Veterinarian Ben Schroeder recommends beginning regular veterinary dental care for horses by the time they reach 1 year of age. Dr. Schroeder uses several equine dental tools including light sedation, oral speculums, and electric and manual tools to treat dental problems such as teeth that develop sharp or hooked edges, loose or fractured teeth, periodontal disease and abscesses. According to the National Fire Protection Association, pets are responsible for about 510 house fires a year. Between 2006 and 2010, those fires amounted to some $8.7 million in damage, and eight people were hurt. AVMA recently re-accredited Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine, a process that all 28 U.S. veterinary schools must undergo every seven years. The process involves a self-evaluation along with a site visit by the AVMA to maintain accreditation.
