Facebook is hosting an education-technology hackathon sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation at the social network's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters. The aim is to get developers to create applications that help students get a college education. Winning ideas earn $100,000 -- and up to 30 apps will win. Technology companies and various industry groups are taking a stand against proposed Federal Trade Commission rules on the online privacy of children, saying the regulations would inhibit innovation and create onerous compliance costs. An Alabama district will use a $292,000 donation to purchase 273 MacBook laptops. The devices are expected to be distributed in November to students in elementary and middle school. School officials say they already had raised about $30,000 to buy laptops for students. Now, however, they plan to use those funds to purchase iPads for students in kindergarten through third grade.
