  • Graduation requirements lead to surge in online course enrollment
The number of K-12 students who were enrolled in an online course in the 2011-12 school year was up by 16% over the previous year, as more states and districts adopted policies requiring online courses for high-school graduation. In an annual report, released this week by Evergreen Education Group, data show that 620,000 students were enrolled in such courses. However, Amy Murin, a lead researcher, said the success of such mandates depends on how they are implemented. • Google Chromebooks gain small but loyal following
A school district in Illinois is one of three in the country using Google Chromebooks in their one-to-one computing programs. Supporters of the laptops cite their access to applications and the ease of having all students' data on the cloud -- rather than stored on the device. Instructional coaches have been hired to help teachers use the technology effectively, and officials say the goal is to use Chromebooks to improve student achievement. • Ill. district seeks to change name of critical website
Officials in Illinois' Hinsdale Township High School District 86 have asked the operators of a website criticizing the school district -- hinsdalehighschools.com -- to stop using the district's name. So far, the operator of the site, who is anonymous, has not done so. Superintendent Nicholas Wahl said the name of the site is confusing to the general public, and the president of the school board said it infringes on the district's name and identity. • Deadline nears for latest round of Race to the Top
The deadline for school districts to apply for the latest round of the federal Race to the Top grant program -- in which $400 million will be distributed -- is Oct. 30. About 900 districts have said they would apply, and officials expect to award between 15 and 25 grants, each between $5 million and $40 million. In Union County, N.C., officials say they hope to use a federal grant to install Internet hot spots and help teachers pay for master's degrees, among other things. The Charlotte Observer (N.C.) • Student uses Skype to attend school virtually
An Illinois high-school student is attending class via Skype, which she has installed on her iPad. One of Alixandria Horstmann's classmates came up with the virtual-schooling solution after she learned she could be out of school for up to three months because of her health. It helps that the school is virtually paperless and has no textbooks, allowing her to better communicate with her peers. KSDK-TV (St. Louis) (10/22) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story
