Duke University researchers created cartilage using induced pluripotent stem cells from mice, according to a study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The method could allow for the development of "a continuous supply of cartilage in a dish," said senior author Farshid Guilak. The next step will be to see if the method works using human cells. San Diego, Calif.-based startup Thesan Pharmaceuticals secured $16 million in a Series A funding round led by Novartis Venture Funds and Novo Ventures. The firm will use the proceeds to develop treatments for inflammatory skin conditions. "Thesan's mission is to develop new chemical entities with novel mechanisms of action in order to substantially improve treatment outcomes for patients with a variety of dermatological diseases," Thesan Executive Chairman and CEO Gordon Foulkes said. ZeaChem has completed construction of its advanced-biofuels plant in Boardman, Ore., and expects production to begin by the end of the year.
