Ninth-graders from low-income backgrounds in North Carolina saw a 30% increase in their test scores after participating in a program that provided them with smartphones. The program -- Project K-Nect -- received funding through Qualcomm's Wireless Reach Initiative, and allowed the students low-cost access to the Web, making it easier for them to communicate with their peers, said Qualcomm's Peggy Johnson. "Essentially the walls of the classroom came down and they were able to share ideas throughout the day," Johnson said. Mashable (10/15) - Enrollment soars at Florida Virtual School

School officials in Bath, Maine, are sending all of the district's teachers, principals, education technicians and librarians -- 255 employees -- to the annual MAINEducation Conference on technology. This is the first time a district has sent so many of its staff to the meeting, which will be teacher workshop day. "This is a good opportunity to invest in our people, to help them see what's possible. We need to be asking how the use of technology is creating a more effective lesson and acknowledging where it is not, or cannot," said the district's technology coordinator, Dean Emmerson.
