Cell biology: Mitochondrial transfer in human oocytes

Scientists have successfully replaced mitochondrial DNA in human oocytes, and generated both blastocysts and embryonic stem cell lines. Although safety studies and clinical trials would be needed before the technique could be used therapeutically, the research, published in Nature, represents proof that it may be possible.
