  • Amazon launches Kindle-management service for schools
Amazon unveiled Whispercast, a service that lets schools manage a fleet of Kindle tablets and e-readers from one website. The service is part of the company's push to get the Kindle into more classrooms. It lets educators set up and monitor students' user accounts and limit what students can do with the device, the company said. • Report: Growth in online courses slows
A recent report finds that 28% of adults in the U.S. are enrolled in online courses -- up from 18% in 2006. However, 38% of those who responded to the survey said they prefer online instruction over in-person courses -- a 1% increase from 2006. "The good news is that there is still a significant gap between preference and participation," the report states. "The bad news is that the gap is shrinking, and cautions that unless online delivery develops a broader value proposition, long-term growth may prove elusive." In Idaho, officials have struggled to find a vendor for the state's school laptop initiative, causing delays in the implementation of the program, which was supposed to be in place this month. There was a lack of competitive bids for the first round -- for an estimated $100 million, eight-year contract. Now, as officials continue the search for a new bidder, their goal is to have the devices in classrooms by the start of the spring semester. The Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Wash.)
